iAVS is a fast, small, incremental and fully automated update via the Internet. Updates are released at least twice a week. No reinstallation of the program is needed for virus database updates!
If you are connected to the Internet, updates are downloaded and installed automatically without any need for user action. The presence of a new version on our servers is checked when the Internet connection is established, and every four hours afterwards. Please download the Avast! Virus Definitions file only if you really need it (e.g. if your computer does not have any Internet connection).

In my experience, Avast! Home porefrms Automatic Updates flawlessly. But, mine’s NOT BETA!The only reason for your difficulties, may be that you don’t have the latest NON-BETA version. Un-install the BETA and get the last good version.If, after you do install the latest good version, AND only have ONE Anti-virus app installed (< HINT), your software Firewall App may be blocking Avast, or you may have Malware that Avast can't even detect, let alone remove.
